'Inside the Hive' is a socio-ecological art project. A group of unique handcrafted beehives
offer the opportunity to encounter undisturbed bee colonies visually and aurally. Bees are
social beings which provoke inner responses that participants are invited to share in
conversations and other forms of artistic expression. This project has as much to do with the
life of a bee colony, as with our human relationships to bees and ourselves.
'Inside the Hive' will be open
28 June - 26 July 7 am - 8:30 pm
&
29 August - 27 September 7am to 7pm
as weather conditions allow.
Tuesdays closed.
Admission is free.
Christ Church Meadow is situated in central Oxford (OX1 1DP).
The entrance to 'Inside the Hive' is on Broad Walk.
In the beautiful setting of Christ Church Meadow two 'St. Johns Hives' are set up; allowing bees to build
and live in an empty space as in a hollow tree. A wooden fence corridor leads about 20 meters into the meadow
where the project is situated under a tree. Here you can 'converse' with one of the bee colonies. Hidden under
a veil you will hear the buzz from 'Inside the Hive', while gazing at the busy bees through a glass window.
The small stripes of netting underneath the windows allow you to smell a hint of the perfume of the hive.
Spend as much time with the bees as you wish. After this intimate and inspiring experience you are invited to
imagine, converse, draw … in the shade of the tree.
The project is the final work for my Social Sculpture Master Studies at Oxford Brookes University.
